The Drifters, Warner Music/Rhino UK and Prism Music Group Ltd have signed a deal that will see new recordings from the group's current line-up released with a wealth of classic hits. The new album, entitled 'The Drifters: Five Decades & Moore' in memory of the late great Johnny Moore, is out now.
The album includes some of the Drifters biggest hits recorded over the last five decades including 'Save The Last Dance For Me', 'Come On Over To My Place' 'Up On The Roof' and 'Saturday Night At The Movies' as well as four new songs, produced by Shaun Lowe at Neon Records, which have all been recorded at Prism Studios in the UK using traditional recording techniques to maintain the authentic Drifters sound. New tracks include 'Baby I Need Your Lovin', 'To Love Somebody', 'I Hear Your Voice' and 'With You' – material that was originally recorded, over the period of the last five decades, by some of the greatest singer songwriters of all time.
The Drifters were formed in 1953 by Clyde McPhatter and Ahmet Ertegun – co-founder of Atlantic Records - under the management of George Treadwell. Between 1953 and 1967, The Drifters recorded exclusively for Atlantic Records and during that period Atlantic released thirty six recordings by The Drifters which all appeared on Billboard Magazine's music charts. Millions of The Drifters records were sold during this period both in the United States and throughout the world. After the death of George Treadwell in 1967, The Drifters continued with Atlantic Records, which the same year became part of Warner Bros.-Seven Arts. 1972 then saw The Drifters release their first in a spate of successful recordings with their new label, Bell Records (eventually Arista).
Managing Director of Prism Music Group Ltd, Kathy Mashadi says: "Today we have re-established the authentic Drifters sound and brand. I am delighted that they are now back where they rightfully should be – at the forefront of the contemporary music industry. We are very pleased that The Drifters have reconnected with Warner, almost four decades later, and we look forward to building further on these successful and historic foundations."
'Five Decades & Moore' is dedicated to the memory of late great Drifter Johnny Moore, who died in 1998. Johnny was the longest serving member of The Drifters and made a significant contribution to the group's legacy. To this day, Johnny Moore remains much loved by Drifters fans of all ages.
