A sad loss

Music lovers across the world are mourning the sad loss of Jerry Wexler, one of the most significant and influential figures in American pop music, who died as a result of congenital heart failure last Friday - aged 91 years.

Gerald - Jerry - Wexler was one of the major record industry icons behind the 1960's soul music and was a partner alongside Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records. Together they built up Atlantic Records into a major force and oversaw the recording sessions of a truly remarkable collection of musicians.

Jerry played a significant role with The Drifters during the 50's and 60's overseeing, producing and promoting many songs and albums produced during the Atlantic era. His personal taste predicted the path of popular music for more than 30 years and his long list of credits also includes the likes of Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and many more.

Wexler was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. From doo-wop, rhythm & blues, jazz and soul, Wexler brought black music to the masses.

The Treadwell family would like to offer their sincere condolences to Jerry's friends and family at this sad time. As a token of respect, the current Drifters line up will be wearing black ribbons on stage at forthcoming shows during August instead of their usual red ribbons.
